Cell cultures suspended in a fluid environment are the basis for the production of important medical products such as insulin, vaccines and drugs for cancer therapy.

The devices currently used for this type of production are highly inefficient. Some, like blenders, hit the cells with their blades, breaking them during cultivation. Others do not provide sufficient oxygen and nutrients to ensure proliferation and development.

For this reason, Cellex developed SUSPENCEĀ®, which stands for Suspension Environment for Cell Culture, a device in which a fluid is continuously pumped into a chamber from the bottom, lifts the cells and confines them in a culture zone. Then, it exits from above and, in an external circuit, is automatically enriched with oxygen and nutrients, before returning to the chamber. In this way, the cells are cultivated gently, without excessive stresses that can break them, and they are provided with the oxygen and nutrient supply they need for proper proliferation.

In so doing, we have achieved a cellular production efficiency (hence, a drug production efficiency) up to 10 times higher than the best device available on the market. SUSPENCE has been validated in laboratory operating conditions and it is now on its way to industrialization.

The comparison between SUSPENCE and the current gold standard, performed with the help of important research institutions, showed that, at the fifth day the vital cells in SUSPENCE are 97,5% the total amount of cells in culture (47,6% in the gold standard). During the production of a vaccine, at the eighth day SUSPENCE produces 190% more drug that its best competitor. Finally, in the specific case of cell cluster production for drug screening, 56,4% the cluster cultured in SUSPENCE has the right size and shape to be used (6,25% in the gold standard). Considering that, in the drug production process, the costs related to the cell culture are about 40% the total production costs, SUSPENCE lowers the drug production costs by 21%-36%.

SUSPENCE has been compared to its main competitors as regards the main features required by the customers of similar devices. SUSPENCE has a better performance as regards all the features investigated.
